The historic Punta Gorda Train Station was built in 1928, as one of six Spanish Mission style depots constructed in Florida by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Our historic depot in Punta Gorda is the last remaining of its kind, and was donated in 1996 by Fred C. Babcock to the Punta Gorda Historical Society.
At a time when automobiles were a luxury and air travel was in its infancy, trains were the lifeblood of American transportation. The station not only facilitated travel but also played a crucial role in the economic and social development of Punta Gorda and the surrounding areas.
The Growth of Punta Gorda
During its heyday, the Punta Gorda Train Station was a bustling center where locals and travelers alike would gather. It served as a critical point for transporting goods, including the region's famous agricultural produce, which included citrus fruits, cattle, and seafood. The station helped put Punta Gorda on the map, drawing tourists to its beautiful shores and contributing to the town’s prosperity. The station also witnessed significant historical moments, such as the arrival of soldiers during World War II.
Decline and Preservation
With the Rise of Automobile Travel and The Expansion of The Interstate Highway System in The Mid-20th Century, Rail Travel Began to Wane. by The Late 1960s, Passenger Services to Punta Gorda Had Ceased, and The Station Fell Into Disuse. the Once-Bustling Hub of Activity Faced the Threat of Decay and Demolition.
Recognizing Its Historical and Architectural Significance, the Punta Gorda Historical Society and Local Preservationists Rallied to Save the Station. Through Their Dedicated Efforts, the Building Was Restored and Repurposed, Ensuring Its Survival as A Cherished Landmark.
A New Life for The Train Station
With Its Architecture Still Intact, This Historic Train Station Has Been Given a New Life in The Form of Punta Gorda’s First Kava Bar - Downtown Kava, Which Now Occupies the Majority of The Space. This Unique Speakeasy-Style Bar Does Not Serve Any Alcohol, but Rather a Variety of Coffees, Teas, Kava and Kratom, Along with Hand-Crafted Mock-Tails. This Laid-Back Environment Is a Great Place to Have a Drink with Friends and Enjoy a Unique Historic Venue.
