Daytrip Idea: Cayo Costa

Have there been times when you wanted to go somewhere to relax and enjoy nature as it was meant to be? Whether you have lived in the area for years or are visiting for the first time, you are sure to experience a phenomenal escape from it all – right here in Southwest Florida.

Cayo Costa is a magical island that is part of a chain of barrier islands sheltering Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound. This state park contains nine miles of soft, white sandy beaches and 2,506 acres of pine forests, oak-palm hammocks, and mangrove swamps. The park is accessible only by boat, including the Pine Island ferry boat, private boat charters, or your own vessel. The limited island access is one of the main reasons why you will find your own piece of tranquility there. At times you may feel like you have the whole island to yourself!

You will find a variety of activities to occupy you during your visit, including hiking, off-road bicycling, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, picnicking, fishing, shelling, wildlife viewing, camping, and sunbathing. Amenities include boat slips, beaches, hiking trails, picnic pavilions, 12 primitive camping cabins and bath house/restrooms. The park offers a small nature center/gift shop with nature exhibits as well as items for sale. The park has the following available for purchase: ice, sun screen, bug spray, T-shirts, hats, bird keys, shell keys, and postcards. Cayo Costa has bikes available for half-day and full-day rentals.

What a nice way to unplug from the world, explore and relax and enjoy the beauty of true Florida. If you are a nature lover who wants to experience the way Florida beaches looked before the condos and motels, do yourself a favor and take a trip to this beautiful state park –you won’t be disappointed!
